Could it be strep?

4th Dec 2016

Sore throats can be caused by viruses, bacteria, irritants or allergies. Strep throat is a bacterial infection and is treated with antibiotics. Common symptoms of strep include sudden onset of pain, fever over 101 F, enlarged tonsils, blood red spots on the back of the throat, and swollen lymph nodes. Many kids with strep also have head and belly pain. Sometimes strep causes a sandpaper red rash.

Most sore throats are caused by cold viruses. Unlike strep, viral sore throat illnesses usually include runny nose or cough. Antibiotics do not help viral sore throats–no matter how painful.

Strep is most common in school-aged children. It is very contagious so kids with strep should stay home from school until treated with antibiotics for one day. Strep can live on anything that has been in contact with saliva, so it’s important to sterilize, toothbrushes, water bottles, etc.
